Let’s Do Work, 2017.

I hope that everyone will forgive me for this post being about 28 days late.  The beginning of 2017 started off in a crazy frenzy with Kris and Jessica Bryant’s wedding, so it has taken me a little bit of time to recover and start getting my head on straight for what is about to explode in 2017.  The last few days in my office I have been wrapping up the edit on Kris and Jessica’s wedding, editing Ashley & Jake and Sarah & Matt’s engagement sessions that happened earlier this year, and giving my yearly planner a run for its money as 2017 gets penciled in faster than I could have ever expected!

This coming year I have something BIG happening with the addition of a new photographer to my business.  I haven’t given a formal shout out to Lianna yet, but it is definitely coming!  Lianna spent most of 2016 training with me, and will now be cranking out a full year of weddings on her own for the J. Anne Photography brand.  On top of Lianna being added to the mix, I’ll be shooting my normal 15-20 weddings this year with my trusty side-kick, Janelle, by my side.  Add to that all of the engagement photos, boudoir sessions, and the fact that my three boys are involved in more activities than ever now that they’re getting a bit older…. I imagine that 2016 is going to look like child’s play in regards to the scheduling that is happening for 2017, but I’m ready.

We’re traveling to Santa Barbara twice this year for what are sure to be some amazing weddings, and I will also be hopping  the pond to Paris and down into the South of France later this Spring.  This summer I’ll be heading to San Francisco to shoot at San Francisco City Hall for the first time and I could not be any more thrilled to check that adventure off of my bucket list!!

There are still a large handful of couples who haven’t done their engagement session yet (Ashley & Blake, Jen & James, Jackie & Tony, Halee & Heath, Heather & Nick, Archana & Diego, and Jeanne & Kyle!!)… but of the engagement sessions that have wrapped you guys can see that it’s going to be yet another year of insanely gorgeous people making my Instagram feed look far better than I could ever manage to do on my own!

On the left is Sarah & Matt!  They’re going to knock my socks off with a white on white on white wedding at the International Peace Education Center in April… on the right are Lindsay & Mark who will be married in October on the beautiful grounds of TPC Summerlin!

This adorable couple below are Cole & Alyssa who are also getting married in October, but they’re taking us on a little scenic tour up to the Paiute reservation for their gorgeous wedding!!

Ashley & Jake are below on the left and they are the next wedding up on my docket for the year!!  Mandarin Oriental will host their black tie affair this coming March and I’m over the moon excited for them!  Ashley and Will are below on the right… and these two babes are taking us up the coast of California as they will be married at Bacara in Santa Barbara in July, and it will basically be everything that my dreams are made of!  Caitlyn & Scott are below on the left and they are seriously the sweetest two people you might ever meet.  They will be having a dreamy lavender wedding at Dragon Ridge this Spring while Olivia and Brad on the right are kicking it old school in September at the classic and amazing Las Vegas Country Club!! I seriously can not wait to see both of these babes walk down the aisle!

Last November Newfly Films came over and made a video for me to show to my ladies during Bridesgiving dinner… in that version of the video I cried like a little baby telling all of my 2016 brides how much they meant to me, and that my business would basically not survive without them… I wasn’t about to let that cry face make the internet, so I asked my guy Stefan over at Newfly to make me a new cut of the video because it  is just too much fun not to share some bits and pieces of my hoes!!

Soo…  let’s fucking do work, 2017!

Las Vegas Engagement Photos :: Ashley & Jake

I just delivered Jake & Ashley their engagement photos and I received a follow up email from Jake that said, “Love them, they are spectacular!!! She looks like an angel with that light! You are unbelievably good.”

I responded by saying, “You are an unbeliveably hot piece of sexy man meat!!!  ;)  Can’t wait to see you in a couple months!!!  xo.”

He responded, “LOL (insert laughing face with tears).  Wow.  Thanks.”

This is why they’re my clients.

Jake and Ashley showed in for their first set of engagement photos in Chicago crazy late.  They were driving in from Champaign, IL… and it was a rainy gross day, so traffic wasn’t at its finest.  They came to our meeting spot full of apologies and kindness, and we went straight to work shooting through dark Chicago clouds that were spitting rain on us.  Throughout the entire shoot we laughed hysterically as though we were old college friends… except, I’m way older, so maybe I’d be more like the sorority sister who took 10 years to get though a Bachelor’s degree, but whatever.

I knew from the moment we got started shooting that these two were going to be an absolute dream to work with on their wedding.  They are smart and charming, witty and full of banter…. and not to mention they’re freaking nails in the looks department.  The photos in Chicago turned out beautiful and worthy of a midwest fall season, but when these two darlings hopped a plane to spend a weekend doing some wedding planning , I whisked them away into our sunny Vegas desert to show them what engagement photos could really be!!

On the side of mountain we stood.  Ashley and Jake stood before me in beautiful winter sunlight.  Ashley looked radiant, but I could tell that there was something missing.  I tried to order wind for the shoot, but somehow nature didn’t oblige my request… so it just seems that Ashley’s skirt was laying too flat and lifeless.  As luck would have it, Ash had asked me to bring a pair of scissors to cut some tags she had in her shirt that showed through.  I asked Ashley if I could take these scissors and cut a slit up her skirt, and I’m pretty sure she said… “You want to what?!!”  And then she said yes…. And then I chickened out…. And then she said, okay… And then I said… “No!  It has to be done!”  And then…. a little snip was made and the Project Runway star in me came out as I grabbed the two sides of the material and separated them up her leg.  I’ve never done that before in my life, but Tim Gunn would be so so so proud.

And, I do have to say myself… it was the RIGHT decision.

Exhibit A.  Jake, Ashley, and Leg.  What a beautiful family of three.  ha ha ha!

Ashley and Jake are getting married this March at Mandarin Oriental and I can’t wait!!  Hair and Makeup done by Amelia C. & Co!!

Surprise Wedding Proposal :: Ashley & Will

Like most good conversations, alcohol played a major factor in my conversation with Will almost exactly a year ago.  It was chilly in Charleston, SC on the day of Paige and Colby’s wedding, but we were out on the dock baring the elements with vodka there to warm our souls.  Will and Ashley are good friends of Paige and Colby, so they attended the wedding as guests, and I was there to photograph the wedding.  I sat on the sofa, casually sipping a cocktail while I took a break from shooting, and Will… who had been maybe not-so-casually-sipping… sat down beside me.  He told me of his plans to propose to Ashley, and asked if I could make sure that I was involved so that it could be photographed.  We tried hard to curb our enthusiasm since Ashley was just a few feet away from us, but my photographer-heart was elated!   For one, I had never shot a surprise proposal before and for two, it was WILL & ASHLEY!!

Will and I texted for several months.  We worked hard to try to come up with a plan of how to surprise Ash, but everything was veto’d because of one major element of non-surprise… Ashley knew me.  If I “randomly” showed up at their nice dinner… or popped out of a bush while they took a romantic stroll, then Will’s cover would obviously be blown.  So, we got a little bit more clever, and decided to do the exact opposite.  We decided to make the photo shoot front and center.  The photo shoot became our cover.

I faked a story to Ashley and one of her best friends, Olivia, who is also one of my beautiful brides, about needing to shoot something pretty for fun.  I told her that I felt stifled and just needed something beautiful to photograph to get back into my groove.  From there, it was planned that Olivia and Jace would get dolled back up in their wedding clothes, and I convinced Ash that I wanted to do more of a full bridal party… so I twisted her arm into being part of the shoot, and then Ashley twisted her sister’s arm and made her be in the shoot, as well!

I remember that Ash texted me one day saying that she couldn’t believe that Will was so on-board for the shoot, dare she say… excited even!! She thought that he would hate being asked to take photos for no damn reason in the middle of the desert on his day off… as most boyfriends would be.  I quickly texted Will telling him that he needed to play the pissed off boyfriend card a little harder!  ha ha ha!!!  It was just so much fun to plan this proposal right under Ashley’s nose!!

There wasn’t a single hiccup in the plan.  Nobody stuck any feet in their mouths.  Nobody accidentally said too much.  It all started off just nice and easy… a pretty shoot in the desert, just as we planned all along.

I absolutely died over this loose french braid that Your Beauty Call mastered on Olivia!!  I also remember whispering to Olivia that I was just stalling time because I wanted to make sure that I played the “styled shoot” gag long enough…. ha ha ha!! las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0004 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0006And then it happened.  The entire group and I had a key phrase for when we were going to isolate Will and Ashley.  I was going to say that I wanted to do some bridal party photos without the married couple, and told them that they could take a break.  As Jace walked by, I said… “Jace, do you think that you could grab me a water from the car?”  That was it!  That was the cue for them to beat it! :)las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0005

After a few shots of just Will and Ash, I told them that I wanted something different.  I wanted a photo where they would walk into each other rather than just be side to side.  So, I separated them and said that I’d count to 3 and then they could turn and walk before grabbing hands when they met.

And then WILL DID THIS!  ha ha ha!  So so so perfect.  It might be my favorite photo of the entire day!  So much excitement and anticipation was building for everyone involved… and then we got the thumbs up… it was go-time!las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0007 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0008

Will and Ash stood and talked for a moment… we couldn’t hear what he said exactly, but Ashley told us later that the first thing that he said to her was… “So, you know this isn’t actually a styled shoot, right?”  And then he got down on his knee and asked her to spend her forever with him.las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0009

And…. she said yes!!!   (Good thing, or this adorable card that She Paperie made for the shoot would have had to go in the garbage!!)las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0016las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0010 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0011 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0012 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0013 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0014 las-vegas-wedding-photographer-proposal_0015
A family photo with Charlie, their pup, and a group photo finished off the time spent on the proposal, but Will wasn’t finished.  He had another surprise up his sleeve!  He whisked Ashley away to a HUGE surprise engagement party in which so so so many people had flown in to celebrate their amazing day… I mean, childhood friends were popping out from behind walls, and tears were being share by the bucketful!  To say ‘amazing’ would be an understatement… ‘phenomenal’ too little of a word…. it was downright everything.  It was a fairytale.
